Hi, I'm David! I've been working in software for more than 10 years now, with professional experience spanning from low level networking appliances, to Cloud platform APIs, to front end React SPAs. Throughout my career I've led teams on multi-quarter projects to deliver key features, both for enterprise customers with specific requirements and for the general public. In my free time, I enjoy exploring new areas of the software field with projects in embedded programming and 3D graphics, and practicing my photography hobby.

Work Experience

  • Led communication and engineering integration relationship with Cloud Bare Metal Solution vendor.
    • Drove prioritization and scheduling of vendor tasks, including coordinating technical details and delivery dates of new features.
  • Completed product readiness review for initial launch of the Cloud Bare Metal Solution product.

    • Analyzed failure modes and potential reliability concerns.
    • Performed SLO analysis for customer-facing SLA.
    • Developed and instituted quality assurance and risk management policies between Google and the vendor.
  • Designed, led ~4 software engineers in implementation of, and launched public preview of the Cloud Bare Metal Solution Interactive Serial Console feature.
    • Led design discussions with two Google teams and vendor to arrive at final design.
    • Drove vendor implementation of required features by coordinating with vendor TL and project manager.
    • Landed public preview of feature, enabling customers to recover from many failure modes, and enabling debugging of previously inaccessible bugs.
  • Led ~5 software engineers in implementation and launch of several key features in version 2 of the Cloud Bare Metal Solution API.
    • Trained new team members in developing for the API codebase.
    • Led Preview and GA release efforts, including coordinating contributions by ICs and driving completion of horizontal launch requirements
      • Trained team member to take over release process management.
    • Presented the new feature set to several customers and customer-facing product managers and customer engineers.
  • Designed, led ~3 software and network engineers in implementation of, and launched version 1 of the Cloud Bare Metal Solution API.
    • Led design discussions with vendor around initial API structure and integration.
    • Landed service with customers, received positive feedback about newly available workflows.
  • Developed enhancements to a nascent storage fleet monitoring dashboard.
    • Deployed modernized storage capacity alerting solution driven by the unified database.
  • Led effort to determine business owners for several thousand storage volumes, as part of a firm-wide mandate to reduce file counts.
  • Took ownership of a legacy NetBackup installation and associated infrastructure that maintained backups of several petabytes of critical business data.
    • Designed, developed, and deployed a tool in Go to remediate a critical privilege escalation vulnerability, reducing attack surface by two orders of magnitude.
    • Added metric collection, a dashboard, and a metadata service to the legacy infrastructure.
    • Debugged and fixed obscure issues in legacy code causing backup failure.
  • Planned and executed a comprehensive turndown of the NetBackup installation and infrastructure.
    • Statically reverse engineered proprietary binaries built for SPARC to enable compatibility with proprietary data formats.
    • Built several tools in Go to convert backup data and metadata to forms that can be used without NetBackup, along with extensive tests to verify correctness before execution.
    • Replaced the previously existing convoluted restore process with a lightweight process that has no NetBackup dependencies, and is faster and easier for customers and team members.
  • Designed and led the development of management automation components for third-party NetApp storage appliances.
  • Modernized an important legacy C application used for system administration with new UI and performance features.
  • Diagnosed low level network and hardware performance issues.
  • Developed certificate management tool for unattended private key rotation.
  • Wrote a novel client emulator in C to test Gateway functionality.
  • Developed infrastructure and features for CodeCon, an online coding contest platform. http://codecon.bloomberg.com
